In Flander’s Fields

“In Flander’s Fields” was written in 1915 by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian physician.

He was inspired by the funeral of friend and fellow soldier Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, a victim of the Second Battle of Ypres in the first World War.

Although unconfirmed, it’s said that McCrae wrote the poem, and disposed of it. His fellow soldiers retrieved the poem, and it went on to become one of the most quoted poems from the war.
