I’ve been reading 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and part talks about the first telegraph lines we tried to place under the water to communicate with other countries. Needless to say, the first several didn’t work long before the depth, or seawater, or other variables contributed to it failing to work.

Then a man designed and manufactured another telegraph cable, wrapped in a type of polymer? And stuffed with hemp. It was the first cable to be placed under the oceans, and maintain it’s function.

This got me looking into why the hemp part is useful. Turns out, hemp is extremely useful in a huge variety of different ways!
